Knowing different ways to love yourself will make it easier to maintain a healthy attitude and boost your confidence and self-esteem.
You cannot fully accept yourself if you don’t love yourself. For most people, loving themselves does not come easily or naturally, therefore knowing practical things you can do will make it easier.
Why You Should Love Yourself
Loving yourself is the highest form of self-care. Reasons for loving yourself include:
- You will reduce or eliminate self-criticism and self-judgment.
- You will increase your self-esteem and self-worth.
- You will experience more happiness.
- You will have more confidence.
- You will love others more.
- You will have more empathy and compassion.
- You will give yourself permission to pursue your dreams.

When you truly love yourself, you will be a better person and be more authentic with those you interact with.
How I Practice Self-Love
Time for reflection is an important practice for me. I give myself at least an hour of quiet time daily, where I practice mindfulness techniques. Every Sunday, I give myself up to two hours of quiet time, which includes completing a weekly review and preparing for the following week.
Making my self-care and my overall wellness a priority has made a difference in my attitude, my energy levels and my ability to focus.

- Notice the good in your life daily. No matter how challenging things may seem, there are always things to be grateful for. When you make appreciation a regular practice, you will train yourself to focus on what’s good, rather than what’s not right.
- Accept yourself fully. This means not comparing yourself to others. You are a unique being, and there will never be anyone like you. When you accept who you are, you will be more authentic and connect better with others.
- Let go of what you cannot control. Most things in life are beyond your control. You can only control the thoughts you think, the images in your mind, the emotions you generate and your behaviour or actions. If you focus on these, you will accept you are in control of how you feel and what you want to experience.
- Have clear priorities and set goals. Your priorities and goals give you clarity and direction. That means you know what is important to you. It will also help you focus better, which will enable you to progress faster towards what you want.
- Focus less on gaining validation or approval of others. Needing to be loved and accepted by others often drives people’s actions. If you are comfortable with who you are and love yourself, other people’s opinions won’t matter.
- Forgive yourself for mistakes you have made. You cannot truly practice self-love if you don’t allow yourself to make mistakes. You have strengths and weaknesses, therefore to be true to who you are, you have to accept all aspects of yourself.
- Make your health and wellness a priority. Making your needs just as important as other people’s needs is the highest form of self-love because your self-care matters. If you are healthy mentally, emotionally and physically, it will help you maintain a positive attitude and also improve how you interact with others.
- Learn to better understand and control your emotions. You are an emotional being. The better you understand your emotional triggers, the better you will manage them. It will also allow you to generate the emotions you want to experience.
- Connect with people who inspire and challenge you. Being around pessimistic and negative people will bring you down. If you are around inspiring and optimistic people, you will feel empowered and have a better attitude. Inspiring and supportive people will lift you up when you are down, and challenge you when you are not living up to your standards.
- Focus on being of service to others. Being of service to others is an expression of self-love. If you love yourself, you will want to do your part to make the lives of others easier or better. Providing service to others is also rewarding and will make you feel good about yourself.

People will come into and leave your life, however you always have to live with yourself. Loving yourself will help you enjoy your company and accept yourself fully.
