The concept of using mind maps is not a new concept in project management or personal productivity.

It is a powerful technique for bringing clarity to almost anything that requires us to use our mind. A mind map creates connections in a similar way to how our brain processes information.

I have been recently using a computer-based mind mapping program called Mindjet Mindmanager to create mind maps for some of the things I am working on.

Some of the benefits of using a mind map includes:

  • It is a quick way to link ideas and establish relationships between different ideas.
  • It is visually appealing and can be used as a teaching or training tool especially for visual learners.
  • It can help us arrive at an outcome much quicker.
  • It can be started at anytime without needing to have all the information up front. More can be added to the mind map over time.
  • It is a fun way to be creative and to stimulate the mind.
  • It can be used to create templates for processes, which helps us become more efficient.

There are many ways to use a mind map and here are examples of five ways in a mind map can be used.

1. Creating a training plan. This can be used by trainers, facilitators or coaches when preparing for a training program. Here is an example of one.

2. Preparing a business case or proposal. This is very useful in terms of creating a structure for a proposal or business case and can be used to determine what information to include or exclude. Here is an example of how it can be used.

3. Doing a SWOT analysis. A SWOT is a process used for business planning and it stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. An example of one is shown below.

4. Making a decision. Sometimes it is easy to forget all the things that must be considered when making a decision. When everything is out in front of us, making a decision can become a much easier process. An example is shown below.

5. Managing your tasks. Being able to consolidate all tasks into smaller chunks has the added benefit of simplifying the tasks, which ultimately makes it easier to complete them. A simplified example of managing tasks is shown below.

These are just some examples of how mind maps can be used to gain more clarity, become more efficient and reach outcomes a lot easier. Mind maps are easy and fun to create.

All you need to get started with a mind map is an idea. Even if the idea isn’t fully formed, it is a powerful way to capture what is already known.

The great thing about mind maps is that they are very flexible and can be changed as often as you like. If you haven’t been using mind maps consistently or at all, now is the perfect time to get started.

There are many computer-based programs available now, including free versions, so there is no reason why you cannot get started today.
