5 Surprisingly Simple Actions That Will Increase Your Happiness
Things You Can Do Every Day to Feel Happier and Better About Your Life
You, like most people, have a desire to increase your happiness and find a sense of purpose or meaning for your life.
When you are happy, you feel better about yourself and your life, which shows in what you do and how you relate to others.
Happiness does not depend on external things. It comes from within you, which means you can generate happiness.
Most times, doing simple things with consistency will increase your happiness.
What are the Signs of Happiness?
The signs that show you experience happiness regularly include:
- You appreciate the little things in your life.
- You accept and love yourself fully.
- You are comfortable being on your own.
- You have goals you want to achieve.
- You celebrate other people’s successes.
- You know how to manage your emotions well.
- You enjoy learning something new every day.
- You don’t have thoughts, fears, or concerns that keep you awake at night.
- You have healthy relationships.
- You laugh a lot.
People disconnect from happiness when they want more, without acknowledging what they already have and how they can give to others. Your achievements, status or possessions should not influence your happiness.
You should not rely on something you deem good to happen first before you experience happiness. You can do simple things daily to feel happier and better about your life.
5 Simple Actions That Will Increase Your Happiness
Here are five simple actions that will increase your happiness, so you can feel better about yourself and what you are doing in life.
- Smile at yourself whenever you look at a mirror. A simple act of making eye contact and smiling at yourself when you look at a mirror will do wonders for your self-esteem. You will train yourself to practice self-love, which will generate more happiness.
- Invest time into your most important relationships. As you are a social being, your happiness is affected by the connections you have with others. The better your relationships, the happier you will be. Deepening and staying connected with those that matter most will improve your social relationships and bring more joy into your life.
- Plan your happiness. Experiencing happiness does not just happen. The more intentional you are, the better your chances of generating more happiness. Schedule things that make you happy. Laughing, taking time out to play and be childlike again are simple ways to make experiencing happiness a part of your daily activities.
- Practice mindfulness and letting go. Things happen that can trigger unhealthy emotions. When you practice letting go of grudges, resentments, anger, disappointment or sadness, you will feel lighter and give more attention to the emotions you want to experience. Practicing mindfulness techniques will help free your mind of stress or negative emotions.
- Appreciate the present moment and stay focused on where you are going. The present moment is all you have. The past is over and the future is not here yet. While it’s valuable to appreciate each moment and not take anything for granted, know where you are heading or where you would like to be. Have a mission or purpose for your life, and set visions and goals to guide you to live it.
Is the Pursuit of Happiness the Main Purpose of Life?
If you ask most people what they want most in life, the common response is, “I want to be happy.” It seems happiness has become the most sought-after emotion.
While there is nothing wrong with pursuing happiness, my perspective is if a person is happy all the time, how would they know they are?
How would they know they are content versus happy, or grateful versus happy?
There are hundreds of words to describe emotions, yet human beings have been led to believe that experiencing one emotion is the major purpose of life.
Experiencing negative emotions makes us enjoy the positive emotions more. Even though pursuing happiness is important, not allowing yourself to feel other emotions will not give you a full experience of being an emotional being.
Therefore, it is okay to experience other emotions other than happiness, with the understanding you have the power to choose how you want to feel.
Final Thoughts
You are responsible for your level of happiness, which means you can do things to experience it. The more focus you give to your happiness, the better your chances you will experience more of it.
If you rely on chance or luck, or something to happen first before you feel happy, you will always be controlled by external events, which will not give you long-term happiness.
Action Step: Choose one simple action you can take every day to increase your happiness. Make your happiness a daily focus and priority.
