What Are Priorities?

Priorities are things you have identified as meaningful or important to you. People usually will not do something that isn’t valuable or a priority.

Your priorities guide your daily decisions. If you believe something is not a priority, chances are, you won’t give it much focus.

Everyone has different priorities. To become a better producer, knowing how to set the right priorities is necessary.

When you set priorities, you will:

  • Have greater clarity and purpose for the things you do.
  • Use your time more effectively.
  • Create more free time.
  • Achieve the outcomes you want faster.
  • Feel good because you know you are focusing on what matters.

5 Techniques to Set Priorities That Will Increase Your Outputs

Here are five techniques you can use to set priorities that will help increase how much you produce and also help you become a better performer.

  1. Determine what matters most or is meaningful to you. Your priorities should always align with things that matter to you. Doing an assessment of your life regularly is a powerful way to continue giving attention to what’s important.
  2. Use a priority matrix to identify what to focus on. The Eisenhower Matrix is a tool that helps clarify what to give attention to. The four categories are Urgent and Important, Urgent and Not Important, Not Urgent and Important, and Not Urgent and Not Important. Ideally, you should most of your time doing Not Urgent and Important activities.
  3. Schedule high-value activities during your most productive hours. Once you know what your important activities are, they must be scheduled in your calendar. These high-value activities should be included in your daily plan. If you are most productive in the morning, do your most important tasks then.
  4. Remove distractions and interruptions. Distractions and interruptions are productivity and performance killers. Interruptions are usually caused by other people. If you are focusing on your high-value activities, let them know you do not want to be disturbed. Eliminating things that can cause you to lose focus is critical if you want to increase what you produce.
  5. Review, adjust and recommit to what’s important. If you don’t track how you are doing, you won’t know what to improve. Completing either a daily or weekly review will help pinpoint areas you can correct to achieve better outcomes.

Final Thoughts

When you are productive, you will feel better about yourself and what you have accomplished. When you focus more on your priorities, you will progress faster and gain more confidence you will achieve what you want.

If you don’t set priorities, you will lose sight of what’s important and why they matter, which means you will not accomplish your objectives when you want to.
