With all the information available today, how do you put new knowledge into action?

You may have heard the saying, “Knowledge is power.” But do you really know how powerful knowledge can be? Do you know how to put new knowledge into action?

To truly benefit from learning something new, you must first internalize it. This means applying the information to your daily life.

Most people struggle to put new knowledge into action because they lack the proper mindset and skill set.

When you know how to put new knowledge into action, your results and what you achieve will dramatically change.

1-Minute Summary Video

The Curse of New Knowledge: Why is it Difficult to Apply?

One of the biggest challenges facing most people today is applying new knowledge to real-world problems. We’re inundated with new ideas every day, and it’s difficult to apply them effectively. This is the curse of new knowledge.

When you learn new knowledge, it’s difficult to apply because it:

  • Requires too much time to implement.
  • Isn’t relevant to your current situation.
  • Doesn’t fit in with your existing skill set, motivation, or mindset.
  • Isn’t aligned with your values.
  • Takes a lot of effort to get started.

New knowledge is great, and it should not have to be difficult to apply. The problem is we’re often too busy learning to actually put our new knowledge into action. We learn about the latest technology, techniques, and strategies, but we rarely take the time to implement them.

You need to stop thinking about knowledge as a static commodity and instead view it as a dynamic process. You must actively seek ways to apply your knowledge, rather than passively absorb it.

The Advantages of Putting New Knowledge Into Practice

When you put new knowledge into practice, the benefits you will gain include:

  • Increased productivity. When you put new knowledge into practice, you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible. This means you can work smarter, not harder.
  • Improved results. When you apply new information, you’re more likely to achieve better results than you would otherwise.
  • Better decision-making. When you put new ideas into practice, you’re better equipped to make decisions that lead to improved results.
  • More confidence. When you put new skills into practice, you gain self-confidence and feel more capable of achieving your goals.
  • Greater satisfaction. When you put new experiences into practice, you’re happier and more satisfied with yourself because you’ve accomplished something meaningful.

Putting knowledge into practice is the most important step towards achieving any goal. The reason is simple: knowledge alone doesn’t change behaviour.

To put new knowledge into action, you need to take action. You need to act, not just talk about it.

5 Ways You Can Consistently Put New Knowledge Into Action

Here are five things that will help you put new knowledge into action consistently, so you can experience better results and new successes.

1. Identify an area of your life you want to improve

Acquiring new knowledge with no intent will not cause a change in your behaviour. If you want new knowledge, it has to be directed to an outcome you want.

Examples include improving your health, increasing your income, or starting a business. Also, being specific about the result you want will also help. Having a measurable outcome will make it easier to track your progress.

2. Pinpoint what you need to learn to reach your outcomes

When you’re clear on the outcome you want, you will uncover a gap. That gap is the results you’re getting now and the results you want.

If you knew how to get the results you want, chances are you’d already have achieved them. Since you haven’t got the results you want, it means something is missing.

That will require you to upgrade your thinking, learn things, develop skills, or form new habits.

3. Create a plan to apply what you learn

Once you identify the gap between where you are and where you want to be, create a plan for putting new knowledge into action.

This plan can include what you will do daily or weekly, people you can ask to support you and hold you accountable, and the steps you can take if you get off track.

It’s helpful to break down the tasks into small, manageable chunks, which will make it easier to stay consistent.

4. Execute your plan

Now that you have a plan, it’s time to execute. You’ll need to take action regularly.

The key here is consistency. Focus on doing one thing each day that moves you closer to your goal.

It might mean changing your lifestyle, such as eating healthier or exercising more. It could also involve changing your attitude by adopting a different perspective.

5. Track your progress

If you consistently put new knowledge into practice, you’ll see dramatic improvements in your results. You can track your progress by measuring your success.

By tracking your progress, you’ll know what’s working and what you need to do next to move forward. You can reward yourself when you reach milestones along the way.

If you’re not getting the results you want as quickly as you’d like, identify ways you can change your approach.

Final Thoughts

New knowledge without implementation will change nothing in your life. It may make you more knowledgeable, but it won’t cause you to achieve new results.

Your life will improve to the degree to which you can put any new knowledge you gain into action.

Action Step: Select one area in your life you want to improve or a specific result you want to achieve. Identify what you need to learn to achieve that result and create your plan of execution.
