5 Things That Will Help You Deal With Sadness in Your Life

How You Can Overcome Low Points That Steal Your Happiness

As you will experience low points in your life, knowing how to deal with sadness will help you cope better.

Even though sadness is a normal human emotion, not dealing with it well will steal your happiness, which means you won’t have the experiences that give you joy.

Common Causes of Sadness

Everyone experiences sadness and common causes include:

  • Lack of ambition or direction.
  • Unhealthy social networks, which includes family and friends.
  • Habits of self-criticism or self-judgment.
  • Negative self-talk.
  • Experiencing hardship, which can include financial, relational, mental, emotional or physical challenges.
  • Lack of clearly defined or meaningful goals.
  • Experiencing an event that causes pain or a loss of identity.
  • Not communicating needs and wants.

If not dealt with well, sadness can become prolonged, which can eventually lead to depression.

Difference Between Sadness and Depression

Sadness is usually triggered by an event or experience. For example, not getting a promotion or a raise at work, can lead to disappointment, which can trigger emotions of sadness. Another example is losing a person close to you. That can lead to emotions of grief, sorrow and heartbreak, which are forms of sadness.

They are experiences that make you appreciate the happy moments a lot more.

Depression occurs when sadness is not addressed and it becomes a person’s predominant emotional state. When an event is not processed and dealt with in a healthy way, that can cause a person to have low motivation. It can also cause them to view their life negatively, which then can lead to depression.

While it’s okay to feel sadness, it’s not okay to not do anything about or to deny how you are feeling.

Knowing what to do and having tools or processes you can use, will help you deal with sadness, so it does not lead to depression or other mental health challenges.

5 Things That Will Help You Deal With Sadness

Here are five things that will help you deal with sadness, so you can get back to being your normal self again and experience life the way you want.

  1. Acknowledge how you are feeling. Denying how you feel will not help. It is okay to give yourself permission to feel sad. It is also important to not judge your thoughts and the emotions you are experiencing. A simple technique to acknowledge your emotions is to journal your thoughts.
  2. Become aware of your triggers. Find out what causes you to feel sad and the type of sadness you are experiencing. Is it triggered by an event or by someone? As you become more aware of what causes you to feel sad, you can respond better and a lot quicker.
  3. Focus on one thing at a time. The saying, “Take things one at a time” or “One day at a time” is effective. You can set small goals daily as you focus on your well-being. When you attain your daily goals, you can also reward yourself.
  4. Reconnect to things that bring you joy. According to the law of polarity, if you feel sad, you can feel joy too. Do something you love and brings you joy. Revisit your dreams in life and focus on them. Whenever you are feeling sad, engaging your body through movement will change your energy levels and also shift your focus.
  5. Seek help from friends, family or a trained professional. It’s okay to ask for help. Sometimes you need someone who will be there for you, to encourage you to keep going. Remember, everything operates in cycles. Low points in life will pass and good times await, if you take the right actions.

Final Thoughts

There is nothing wrong with feeling sad, because everyone experiences it. Do not judge yourself for the emotions you are experiencing.

If you allow your feeling of sadness to continue, it can lead to bigger mental, emotional and physical challenges. It’s your responsibility to deal with your sadness if you know it is affecting your well-being and your ability to function as normal.

Action Step: If or when you are sad, do not deny it. Sit with your emotion and fully experience what’s coming up. You can also journal your thoughts, which will help process what you are feeling.
