During times of great stress, chaos or turmoil, if you learn to surrender, you will deal with it a lot better, which can lead to positive changes in your life.

The practice of surrendering isn’t something that comes easily or naturally to most people. Whenever we go through a tough time, our programming makes us control or figure things out straight away.

There is another way, which is learning to surrender.

What Does it Mean to Surrender?

The dictionary defines surrender as “to yield (something) to the possession or power of another; deliver up possession of on demand or under duress.” It’s also defined as “to give (oneself) up.”

To surrender means:

  • You no longer resist a situation you’re experiencing.
  • You know you cannot overcome something you’re facing in life without guidance.
  • You release emotions that do not serve you.
  • You accept your way isn’t working and there is a better way to move forward.
  • You trust there is something greater than you that will show you the way.
  • You see a situation for what it is and do not judge it.

When Should You Surrender?

Surrendering is a useful option when:

  • You don’t know how to move forward to overcome something you’re dealing with.
  • You want a better outcome and know you cannot do everything yourself.
  • You want to feel better emotions.
  • You don’t want to struggle anymore.

Why is it Difficult to Surrender?

Surrendering isn’t common practice or something we are taught. Therefore, it’s difficult to surrender because:

  • We don’t want to give up control.
  • It’s not something we know how or want to do.
  • We’re often attached to how things should be or how they should go.
  • We may believe we’re giving up if we do.
  • We don’t want to appear weak.

Surrendering should not be mistaken for giving up. When you surrender, you accept your reality and have faith that whatever’s happening is for a greater good.

5 Things That Will Happen When You Learn to Surrender

Here are five things that will happen when you learn to surrender, which can lead to positive changes and new outcomes.

  1. You will gain new awareness or insights. Since surrendering implies accepting your way isn’t working, it means you’re open to other perspectives or ideas. As you gain new awareness or insights, the best way to handle your situation will become clearer.
  2. You will give up the need to control everything. When you learn to surrender, the need to know what will happen or “how” to do everything will not be as important. This will help you accept your reality for what it is and learn to be present.
  3. You will not fear the unknown and embrace uncertainty. Giving up the need to control also means any fear you have about how things will turn out will fade away. This will allow you to deal with not knowing something a lot better and help prepare you for unexpected events.
  4. You will learn to get in touch with your emotions. When you practice surrendering, it will require you to be honest with yourself and acknowledge how you’re feeling. This will help you form the habit of noticing what’s going on with you, which means you will understand your emotions better.
  5. You will know how to calm or ground yourself. When you understand your emotions better, it will help you let go of what’s not serving you. Practicing mindfulness techniques will help you be in the mental and emotional states that will serve you.

How to Practice Surrendering

There isn’t a right or wrong way to practice surrendering. Here are steps you can take that will make the process easier.

  1. Find a place where you can be alone, preferably in a quiet place.
  2. Set an intention for what you’d like to receive, in terms of clarity or awareness.
  3. Allow yourself to relax.
  4. Notice what’s coming up for you, both pleasant or unpleasant.
  5. Observe your thoughts without resisting or trying to change them.
  6. Stay in the present moment and continue to observe what’s coming up.
  7. Shift your focus to things you are grateful for.
  8. Remain in silence until you feel complete.
  9. Capture any insights you receive.
  10. Use those insights to deal with your situation or challenge from a fresh perspective.

Final Thoughts

When you learn to surrender, it will help you deal with stressful situations from a place of power rather than fear. This means you will overcome your challenges without the need to struggle or suffer unnecessarily.

Surrendering is a useful practice for better mental and emotional health, which will help you get the outcomes you want a lot easier.

Action Step: Next time you struggle with a situation you cannot seem to overcome, use the ideas suggested here to practice surrendering, so you can deal with it the best way you can.
