It’s unlikely you will achieve anything significant without making sacrifices. Highly successful people understand and apply this concept to become better achievers.

What Does Making Sacrifices Mean?

The word sacrifice comes from the Latin word “sacrificium.” It combines the words sacer, which means something set apart, and facere, which means to make.

Today, the word sacrifice is used when referring to giving up something in the short term to gain something better in the long term. It’s giving up something of a lower value to receive something of a higher value.

The sacrifices a person makes reveals their commitment to the result they want.

Examples of Sacrifices People Make

Common examples of sacrifices people make include:

  • Reducing the amount of sleep they get to focus on a project.
  • Not travelling for a period to save for a longer trip.
  • Giving up a hobby to develop a skill.
  • Simplifying their lifestyle to reduce stress.
  • Letting go of unsupportive relationships.
  • Using their fun or recreation time to work on a goal.
  • Giving up immediate pleasures, such as food or entertainment, for a future event.
  • Not socialising to focus on themselves.
  • Putting something they want on hold to support another person’s needs.

Those who do not make sacrifices may not develop the discipline to reach their goals. Learning how it can benefit you will influence the choices you make and what you do daily.

5 Things You Need to Know About Making Sacrifices

Here are five things you need to know about making sacrifices, so you can apply it to become a better achiever.

  1. View it as a long-term investment in yourself. When considering making sacrifices, always keep the big picture in mind. The more clarity you have, the better your chances sticking to your commitments when things get difficult.
  2. It will help you create a new identity. When you make sacrifices with a clear outcome in mind, you will become a different person. This means you will develop a new identity and become a person worthy of achieving that outcome.
  3. The short-term discomfort will strengthen you. The pain of discipline is much less than the pain of regret. When you make sacrifices, you will develop the ability to stay disciplined and focused on your outcomes. This means you will become a stronger person, mentally, emotionally and physically.
  4. You will attract opportunities that will negate what you give up. It’s common to think you will miss out on things when you make sacrifices. However, when you take action to create the outcomes you want, you will notice things you may not have considered previously. This is because you will think on a different level, with greater awareness.
  5. You will expand your comfort zone. When you do things that are challenging, you will tap into resources within you that you had not accessed before. This means things that may have been uncomfortable no longer scare you, and what you are familiar or comfortable with will increase.

Final Thoughts

Whether making sacrifices is worth it depends on why you want something. If you have a strong why, you will make the sacrifices you need to get it.

If you do not want to make sacrifices, be okay with creating results at the level you’re at now. If you make sacrifices to get what you want, the changes to your results and life will surprise you.

Action Step: Review one of your goals and identify the sacrifices you have made or need to make to reach it. Picture what your life will be like when you achieve it and make the sacrifices needed to reach your goal.
