What Does Resistance to Dream Big Mean?

When you have a big dream that scares you, that’s a sign you’re experiencing resistance. This resistance often shows up as self-doubt and confusion.

If not deal with, resistance can lead to:

  • Loss of self-confidence.
  • Feelings of inadequacy.
  • Lack of creativity or imagination.
  • Reluctance to take risks.
  • Dreams being abandoned.

What Causes Resistance When Dreaming Big?

Feeling resistance is part of the process and is usually means you’re stepping outside your comfort zone.

The causes of resistance include:

  • Unpleasant experiences, which can include failure.
  • Not knowing how to achieve a goal.
  • Lack of self-belief or having self-doubt.
  • Not having resources.
  • Slow progress towards a goal.
  • Lack of support.
  • Feeling you are behind or not where you should be.

If you don’t experience resistance when pursuing a dream, your dream is not big enough. Feeling resistance is not a reason to give up on your dreams.

5 Ways to Deal with Your Resistance to Dream Big Again

Even though there are many things you can do to deal with resistance, it’s best to keep things simple.

Here are five steps you can take to deal with your resistance to dream big again, so you can overcome any self-doubt you may have and take action to get what you want.

  1. Calm yourself and your mind. When resistance comes up, it usually means you have a lot of mental chatter. It’s best to ground yourself and notice what’s coming up for you. Question your thoughts and assumptions. Are they true? Do you know with absolute certainty your doubts are valid?
  2. Use your perception to view things differently. It’s often said perception is reality. However, that is not always true. When you train yourself to see things from different points of view, many of your assumptions or beliefs will not have power over you.
  3. Break your dreams or goals into smaller, manageable steps. Every journey begins with a single step at a time. Create a plan so your dreams don’t appear intimidating or overwhelming. As you progress towards your dreams, update your plan as needed.
  4. Identify the next obvious action you can take. Once you have a plan, it’s time to execute. It’s important to remember not to make your dream smaller when resistance comes up. It will require you to grow. An example of an obvious next action is to identify a skill you need to develop or something you need to learn.
  5. Find a success partner who can offer other insights. A success partner is someone who wants you to reach your big dreams because they will win too. You can work with your success partner to define the actions to take and how to deal with obstacles on the way to reaching your big dreams.

Final Thoughts

One thing to remember is resistance always comes second; your big dreams come first. There would be no resistance if you did not have a dream, so see it as a good thing.

It has no power of its own unless you feed it, which means it’s your choice whether to give it power. If you don’t feed it, you can give more attention to your dreams and make them a reality.

Action Step: If you have a big dream and feel any resistance, reflect on why it’s coming up. Use your perspective to view your resistance differently and take the next obvious action you can to move closer to your dream.
