Why focus on developing an inspiring identity? Isn’t it being consistent or disciplined enough?
Identity goes much further because it is the highest form of consistency and discipline.
When you develop an inspiring identity of the future you, the benefits include:
- You won’t need to rely on will power to do the things you know you should.
- Taking action toward your goals will become easier.
- You will increase your chances of developing new habits.
- You will have higher clarity and know what you are aiming for.
- You do not need to feel motivated to do something.
When you know how to develop an inspiring identity of the future you, what you do now will have more importance.
Example of How Knowing Your Identity is Beneficial
If someone asks me whether I would like to have a cigarette, my answer will always be no because being a smoker is not my identity. I don’t have to give further thought to it because my identity is, “I’m not someone who smokes.”
When I wanted to exercise regularly, I did not have the identity of someone who did. This meant I did not make my physical health a priority. I could convince myself it was okay not to exercise, even though I knew it was beneficial, and it was something I should do.
When I focused on who I needed to be, my future identity, to make my physical health a priority, my present identity shifted. As I acted like a person who made his health a priority, exercising consistently became easier.
I did not have to negotiate with myself whether I should or shouldn’t exercise. It became a non-negotiable commitment I made with myself. Now, my identity is, “I’m a person who exercises regularly and makes his health a priority.”
That is the power of developing an inspiring identity of the future you.
5 Steps to Develop an Inspiring Identity of the Future You
Here are five steps you can take to develop an inspiring identity of the future you, so you know you are on the way to becoming the person you want to be.
- Build the picture of what you want or who you want to be in your mind. Before anything changes externally, things have to shift internally first. Engage your imagination to build the picture of who you want to be. How will you think and act in twelve months, in three years, or in five years? See yourself as that person now.
- Model people you admire. If there is a result you want , find out who has done it. If you want to develop a quality or habit, connect with people who have it. Model what they do and learn from them. Find out what they believe about themselves to become who they are.
- Create a personal growth plan. Once you know what you want or who you want to be, create a personal growth plan to guide you. Your plan should include milestones and how you will reward yourself for making progress.
- Review your progress regularly. If you don’t keep track of how you are going, you won’t know what’s working or what’s not. Your aim here is to focus on what you have gained or the progress you have made instead of what you have not done. If you know something is not working well, change things.
- Work with a success partner. While holding yourself accountable to someone is valuable, the progress will be more enjoyable if someone is doing it with you. This means you both want a similar outcome and want each other to succeed. This will also help with giving and receiving feedback.
