5 Ways to Remain Focused on What Matters Most Despite Facing Challenges

Learning how to maintain your commitment to what matters most during difficult times is more important than when things are going well.

It’s inevitable as you strive to achieve your goals, you will face challenges. That’s when your commitment to your priorities will be tested.

What Does it Mean to Maintain Your Commitment?

Your commitment to something is your willingness to take on and fulfill obligations. It’s something you define as significant and take responsibility to follow through until you reach your desired outcome.

To maintain your commitment means to do what’s needed to achieve your objectives. To reach new levels of success will require greater commitment, focus and the ability to stay persistent despite facing challenges.

When you commit to something, it means you have a purpose for doing it.

Things That Will Happen When You Maintain Your Commitment

The benefits of staying committed to what’s meaningful include:

  • You will develop a higher level of discipline.
  • You will have more clarity.
  • You will step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself.

How to Maintain Your Commitment During Difficult Times

Maintaining your commitment when you encounter obstacles on your way to success is hard. You need mental and emotional strength to keep going.

Here are five things you can do to maintain your commitment during difficult times so you can eventually reach the success you want.

  1. Have success partners you can reach out to. Success partners will also gain something if you reach your goal. When things are challenging, they can inspire you and also offer different perspectives to get you back on track.
  2. Focus on the big picture and the benefits. Make the outcome you want visible. If it isn’t, other things will take your focus and time. The end result is the big picture. Identify what you will gain if you reach it and the difference it will make.
  3. Create a plan and review regularly. Without a plan, you will not have a clear direction. Your plan should anticipate challenges before they come up and identify strategies to overcome them. It’s also useful to define milestones along the way that will indicate you are making progress.
  4. Develop new habits or rituals. Simple habits you can form include reading your goals and taking one action daily to get closer to success. Eliminating habits that are not helpful will also support you to stay committed.
  5. Reward yourself for any progress you make. If you reward yourself when you progress, you are training yourself to continue taking action. Your brain loves positive stimulation. Give yourself intelligent rewards that will inspire you to keep going.

Risks if You Are Not Committed

If you do not maintain your commitment, the risks include:

  • You will not reach the outcomes or successes you want.
  • You will decrease your confidence and level of self-trust.
  • You will not develop your potential or grow into the person you can be.
  • You will not learn how to deal with challenges effectively.
  • You will not feel good about yourself.

Final Thoughts

Your level of commitment will affect what you achieve. As you learn to maintain your commitment, your ability to handle challenges will improve, which will make you a better goal achiever.

When you decide what you want and can stay committed to it, you will accelerate your progress, which means you will enjoy better results sooner.

Action Step: Identify one outcome you want to achieve over the next 90 days. Determine what you will gain when you achieve it and create a plan to get there. Find one success partner who can support you and get started executing your plan.
