How to Set Right Intentions to Boost Your Performance

Setting an intention before doing anything will give you greater clarity on the outcome you want or what needs to be done.

Here are five things you can do to set right intentions, so you can boost your performance and produce the outcomes you want with less effort.

  1. Develop a daily routine. A routine makes it easier to do things, in the right order. Your routine can include closing your eyes for a few seconds before you start a new task. It can also include focusing on things you are grateful for to get into a positive frame of mind.
  2. Have clear priorities and goals. Knowing what you want to achieve and where you are heading makes a difference. Clarity of priorities and goals will help identify actions to take to get you closer to what you want.
  3. Make a declaration every time you begin a task. This can include saying something out loud, like a positive mantra or affirmation. Saying, “My intention now is to…” will help you focus better and eliminate distractions.
  4. Check in regularly and change things, if necessary. If you don’t know what’s working and what’s not, you cannot improve. Find out what worked when you set intentions the previous day. Also identify what didn’t work and why. That will help you change what you are doing and how you work, so you can be productive again.
  5. Celebrate your successes to reinforce what’s working. When you reinforce a positive habit, you increase your chances of sticking with it. Having rewards you can give yourself will motivate you to continue setting intentions.

Risks if You Do Not Set Right Intentions

If you do not set right intentions, the disadvantages include:

  • You will be unfocused and unproductive.
  • You will take longer to get things done.
  • You will generate unhealthy thoughts because you won’t achieve what you want, when you want.
  • You will may waste time doing unproductive things.
  • Your level of self-trust will decrease.

Final Thoughts

When you set right intentions and direct them to specific outcomes, you will boost your performance and become a better achiever. This means you will feel good about yourself and what you are producing.

If you don’t set right intentions, you reduce your chances of achieving your goals, which means you won’t have the experiences you want.

Action Step: Before you start a new task, take a few seconds to get clear on your intention. Identify the outcome you want or what success looks like. Make this a habit before doing any task.
