What Does Proactive Mean?

Being proactive or reactive are mindsets, which means you can choose which one to give energy or focus.

Proactive means taking initiative. It’s about preempting things so you can solve problems or deal with situations better.

You can train yourself to become proactive. When you have a proactive mindset, you will go from reacting to taking intelligent action.

If you have a reactive mindset, you will wait for things to happen before doing anything. This means you’re letting life happen to you.

If you’re proactive, you know your role in creating the results and life you want, and will take steps to make that a reality.

Signs You Are Reactive Rather Than Proactive

Signs you’re more reactive rather than proactive include:

  • You feel overwhelmed often.
  • You have difficulty deciding or take a long time to decide.
  • You often focus on what happened in the past.
  • You rely on others for advice or tell you what you should do.
  • You do not take responsibility when things don’t work out the way you want.
  • You take criticism personally.
  • You give a lot of time and energy to pleasing others.
  • You give up easily when you experience setbacks.

Why Should You Become More Proactive?

The benefits of becoming more proactive include:

  • You can better control your activities.
  • Your health and wellness will improve.
  • You will reduce stress.
  • You will give less time or attention to reactive people.
  • You will be happier and experience life fully.
  • You will have a better understanding of what motivates you.
  • You will appreciate yourself more.
  • You will develop a better attitude.
  • You will become more effective and goal-driven.
  • You will enjoy reaching your goals.

5 Ways You Can Become More Proactive Instead of Being Reactive

Here are five ways you can condition yourself to become more proactive, which means you won’t react to situations and deal with them with a can-do attitude.

  1. Develop the ability to anticipate things. This means becoming better informed about trends, patterns, and cycles. This will require you to keep learning about yourself, having clarity on what you want, and developing a growth mindset. That will help you become solution-focused and less reactive.
  2. Have a “no” list. A way to reduce overwhelm and stress in your life is to decide in advance what to say yes and no to. Having a “no” list will help create a boundary for you and others. As you stay true to what you want to say no to, things of a lower priority will not require your attention.
  3. Know when to walk away from a situation. Other people affect your mental and emotional states. Sometimes, difference of opinions or values can trigger you if you’re unaware of what’s going on. Whenever you feel an inclination to use reactive language, take a break or walk away. Once you’ve had time to think of an appropriate response, you can continue the conversation.
  4. Learn how to handle rejection. If you feel rejected, it’s usually because you want approval and acceptance, or you’re seeking validation. If you let yourself feel bad whenever you experience rejection, you will continue being reactive. You can overcome rejection by facing what you’re afraid of and learning to accept yourself completely.
  5. Be willing to make mistakes. You learn more from your losses than your wins. As you develop a learning or growth mindset, whenever you experience a loss or fail at something, you will not take it personally. It will also prevent you from generating unhealthy emotions, which means you will remain open to possibilities and look for opportunities in every setback.

Final Thoughts

You will increase your personal value when you become more proactive. Being reactive is often a waste of time because that rarely leads to a positive outcome.

Your professional life and personal life will continue to improve as you become less reactive and give your attention to what matters to you.

Action Step: Observe yourself in situations where you may have been reactive previously. Ask yourself, “How could I approach a similar situation using proactive language or taking proactive action?”

Question: What are other steps you can take to become more proactive instead of being reactive?
