How to Conduct a SWOT Analysis on Your Life

The starting point is to know why you want to do one. Once you know that, it’s about completing each section.

Here are questions that can help you consider each section in greater detail.

Identify Your Strengths

  • What am I naturally good at?
  • What knowledge have I gained or skills have I developed that is useful or valuable?
  • What do others say I do well?
  • What qualities do I have that makes me unique?
  • Why am I successful in life?

Examine Your Weaknesses

  • What areas do I need to improve?
  • What do I struggle with or don’t feel confident doing?
  • What do I avoid if I can?
  • What do I believe holds me back from achieving the success I want?
  • What have others said I need to improve?

Determine Your Opportunities

  • What new trends have emerged that are worth exploring?
  • What areas or industries am I interested in learning more about?
  • What is happening in the marketplace that can lead to new or exciting ventures?
  • Who do I know that I can partner with to achieve my goals?
  • What can I focus on to make me more valuable in the years ahead?

Explore Your Threats

  • What changes have affected my work or ability to reach my goals?
  • What do I predict will happen, in terms of technology changes or market trends, that can impact my future?
  • What is no longer relevant now that was a few years ago?
  • How can I learn to anticipate things quicker before they affect my life?
  • What are the biggest risks I should plan or prepare for?

Once you have completed each section, look for themes or things that are common. Then you can ask yourself:

  1. How can I continue to take advantage of my strengths?
  2. How can I turn my weaknesses into strengths?
  3. Which opportunities do I want to focus on, and why?
  4. What are ways to turn the threats into opportunities?

Things to Keep in Mind When Conducting a SWOT Analysis

When doing a personal SWOT analysis, here are a few things to remember.

  1. Be honest with yourself.

  4. Resist the temptation to judge yourself for your weaknesses.
