Why Being Around Other Achievers Can Make You A Better Performer This Year

5 Things I Learned After Attending an Event for High Performers Recently

A powerful lesson I learned early on in my career is we become like the people we spend most of our time with.

I remember when I first emigrated to Australia, I spoke with a Fijian accent, as that’s where I’m originally from. Within two or three years, my accent changed to an Australian accent because I was around people who spoke that way.

This is why it’s often suggested that the best way to learn a new language is to travel to a country where it’s the predominant language spoken so we are forced to adapt quickly in order to be able to communicate effectively.

Likewise, if we want to become better performers, whether it’s in sports, our work, our businesses, or life in general, being around other people who are also committed to becoming better performers will greatly accelerate our progress and our personal growth.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to attend an event called High Performance Academy, hosted by Brendon Burchard, the author of numerous best-selling books, including his most recent one titled, High Performance Habits.

The event exceeded my expectations so I’d like to share some of the things I learned being around other high performers.

How to achieve more this year

5 Benefits of Being Around Other High Performers and Achievers

  1. Other achievers can challenge you beyond what you can on your own. In order to reach new levels of achievement, we have to be willing to do new things. Other achievers can challenge our beliefs, question what we think is possible for us, and also encourage us to be the best we can be.
  2. Other achievers can offer new perspectives. Sometimes we struggle to implement things we learn from such events because we may be focused on doing things our way. It’s beneficial to get other perspectives from those who went through the same experience and can relate to what we are trying to do. They can offer support and hold us accountable.
  3. Other achievers can connect you to other influencers. An event for high performers usually attracts those who are playing at or want to play at a high level. The connections made at such events can open up new networks globally and also lead to introductions to people we may not have the opportunity to contact directly.
  4. Other achievers can encourage new collaboration. As achievers want to achieve more, they’ll be more willing to evaluate joint venture or affiliate partnerships, and collaborate on new projects, if those projects are aligned to a common purpose. Speaking a common success or achievement language is a major factor in deciding who to collaborate with.
  5. Other achievers can inspire and motivate you to go to the next level. When we’re around other achievers, we can’t help but be motivated to do better and go to our next level of achievement. This will require us to evaluate different areas of our lives and eliminate unsupportive habits and implement new habits in order to reach that next level.

Jim Rohn said we become like the five people we spend most of our time with. If we want to reach new levels of achievement, we have to be more conscious of who we are spending our time with. If we are not satisfied with our current level of achievement and do not make any changes, then chances are we’ll continue to achieve at the same level we always have.

The key takeaway is if we want to become a better performer, we must spend more time with those who also aspire to be better performers and are committed to doing so.

Action Step: Review who the five people you spend most of your time with are, outside of your immediate family. Then decide if they are the people who will inspire and motivate you to become a better performer. If they’re not, then it’s time to spend time with new people.
