If you want to stay true to yourself, never compromise your values for success or anything not aligned to what’s true for you.

You and I make many decisions daily that affect what we experience and what we achieve. Some decisions have little or no impact on direction of our lives.

However, certain decisions can have long-lasting effects if we compromise what we value for a short-term gain.

What Does it Mean to Never Compromise Your Values?

To never compromise your values means:

  • You maintain your integrity at all times, no matter what the consequences are.
  • You respect yourself as much as those who are important to you.
  • You speak your truth, even if it affects your relationships.
  • You have principles you live by.
  • You do not let material success cloud your judgment or make bad choices.

Common things people value that they do not compromise include:

  • Family and important relationships.
  • Integrity.
  • Self-respect and respect of others.
  • Accepting and following the truth.
  • Doing what’s right, even if it’s difficult.

To not compromise your values, you need to know what they are first. Lack of clarity and awareness often causes people to make bad choices.

why you should never compromise your values

Those who have a high level of self-awareness will know when they have compromised their values. To stay true to who they are, they take responsibility for their choices and correct them as quickly as they can.

5 Reasons Why You Should Never Compromise Your Values for Success

Here are five reasons to never compromise your values, so you can stay true to yourself and feel good about the choices you make.

  1. You will lose trust with yourself and others. Once you do something against your values, you have compromised your integrity. You have evidence you cannot trust yourself to do what’s right, even if it’s difficult. That means your level of self-trust will decrease. If you cannot trust yourself, others will also not trust you.
  2. Your word won’t mean anything. In the book, The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz, one agreement is “Be impeccable with your word.” If you don’t stand behind your words, you won’t stand for anything. If you say you will do something and not follow through, your word will not have value or importance to you or others.
  3. You will feel mentally and emotionally drained. Doing things that are not aligned to your highest good is usually strenuous and tiring. That will cause you to feel stressed, which will affect your mental and emotional health.
  4. You will lower your standards. If you accept you have done something wrong and then you do it again, it means you expect little of yourself. This means you will lower your standards because doing what’s right will be based on what’s going on for you at that time.
  5. You will not leave a lasting impression or a legacy worth remembering. You will not be a person who will make a notable impact if you do not stand behind your values. Before you decide something that is important, always ask yourself, “How will this decision impact the rest of my life?”

Final Thoughts

Your values are tested when things are difficult or when there is a possibility of new success. The level of certainty you have about your values will determine how you respond.

If you compromise your values for success or when things are tough, then they are not your values. You are lying to yourself by saying they are.

If you let yourself down and violate your values, recommit to doing the right thing.

Action Step: Next time you have to evaluate an opportunity or make an important decision, remind yourself of your values and why they are important to you. Ask yourself, “What is my truth and how will my decision affect me and those important in life?”
